4th Annual Hunger Mountain Christmas Bird Count

4th Annual Hunger Mountain Christmas Bird Count

Thursday, Dec 26, 2019 from 7:00am to 5:00pm

Join the nation’s largest and longest-running citizen science project. This winter bird count, organized by the National Audubon Society, has been getting birdwatchers outside recording species in their backyards and towns for 118 years! This project has become a powerful tool for understanding the rise and fall of bird populations over time.

NBNC organizes and compiles two local Christmas Bird Count circles. The Plainfield circle encompasses a 7.5-mile radius around Plainfield, including the towns of Montpelier, East Montpelier, Calais, Orange, Barre, and Marshfield. One of the oldest circles in Vermont, this count has occurred annually since 1960!

The Hunger Mountain circle, now in its fourth year, encompasses a 7.5-mile radius around Mount Hunger, including Stowe, Waterbury, Duxbury, Middlesex, Bolton, and Worcester.

Participants can either join a team to search a portion of their town by car and by foot, or tally feeder birds from the comfort of their own rocking chair.
