Stowe Winter Carnival

History:

The first winter carnival held in 1921, was the set up by Craig O. Burt, a well recognized leader of the community at that time. He wanted to help bring the people in town out of economic and winter doldrums. It featured ski jumping and tobogganing on a hill behind the public school. It continued to grow, and by 1935 it included extremely competitive races in both alpine and crosscountry skiing. These popular events brought intrigued visitors from far and near. Through the war years the carnival was suspended, and it was not until 1974 that a group of locals brought it back to life. They added a little Stowe twist that has made the Stowe Winter Carnival a unique tradition.
