Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium

The Mission of the Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium is to inspire appreciation for our place in the natural world and to motivate our stewardship of a healthy planet.

The Fairbanks Museum was founded in 1889 by St. Johnsbury industrialist Franklin Fairbanks.

Inside our classic Victorian building, you’ll find a dazzling array of animals and artifacts, dolls and tools, shells and fossils, and much more! Take a trip through the cosmos in Vermont's only public planetarium. A full calendar of events, workshops, lectures and field programs invites everyone to explore the nature of our world.

We ended up here a few months ago while on a spontaneous family weekend adventure and were simply blown away at how amazing this place was. The kids loved the activity center and the ability to stand that close to a real "live' polar bear is something they still talk about! If we ever did end up close to this area again, this place is 100% on our list of places to visit again!

This museum is free for local residents and moderately priced for anyone from out of town. Interesting exhibits, fun gift shop, and a planetarium at certain times of the year. There are special programs in the summer that are geared for children and a play space out back but is often filled with interesting exhibits or animals.

Impressive assortment of taxidermied mammals, reptiles, and birds on the main hall. A separate section features interactive science experiments fun for kids and adults. The second floor of their main hall features a varied collection of cultural pieces.
